Dr. Huang Weilan: When 5G Deterministic Network Meets Autonomous Mobile Robots

[Beijing, China, August 31, 2020] Recently, the Max new product launch conference of Smart Technology was successfully held at the Zhongguancun National Independent Innovation Demonstration Zone, Haidian District, Beijing. Dr. Huang Weilan, deputy leader of the 5G Deterministic Network Industry Alliance (5GDNA), delivered a keynote speech "When 5G Deterministic Network Meets Autonomous Mobile Robots" at the press conference, this document describes the pillar role of 5G in new infrastructure construction, introduces the concept of 5G deterministic networks and the achievements of the 5G DNA Alliance, and shares excellent cases of combining 5G deterministic networks with visual autonomous mobile robots (V-AMR).

5G is the pillar of new infrastructure construction.

In his speech, Dr. Huang Weilan first described industry's contribution to the 5G "new infrastructure". "New infrastructure" refers to infrastructure construction dedicated to science and technology, including 5G infrastructure, UHV, inter-city high-speed railway and inter-city rail transportation, new energy vehicle charging pile, big data center, artificial intelligence, and industrial Internet, 5G is the most important task and pillar of new infrastructure construction. It directly promotes the development of other fields such as big data centers, artificial intelligence, and industrial Internet. In addition, the true success of 5G will be the success of the ToB industry. 5G will become a key enabler for digital transformation of all industries in the national economy. Smart manufacturing will be the largest and most valuable industry in the future.

5G deterministic network enablement for vertical industries

To promote 5G digital transformation in various industries, including the Industrial Internet, Huawei launched the 5G Deterministic Networking (5GDN) concept in May 2019. Based on the cloud-native super-distributed architecture, use key technologies such as ultra-performance heterogeneous MEC and dynamic intelligent network slicing to build predictable, planable, verifiable, and deterministic mobile private networks for industry customers and provide "deterministic + differentiated" service experience, in addition, the industry partners set up the 5G Deterministic Network Industry Alliance (5GDNA) during MWC19 Shanghai. Currently, the 5GDNA alliance has more than 100 members from carriers, industries, energy, healthcare, multimedia, and Internet of Vehicles. Smart Technology is one of the governing members of the 5GDNA alliance.

The 5G DNA Alliance has achieved fruitful results through the joint efforts of its members since its establishment over a year ago. The Alliance actively held multiple group discussions on industry, energy, multimedia, and healthcare, completed more than 30 research topics, released multiple industry white papers, and set up multiple industry benchmarks. In the 2nd 5G Application Collection Contest of Blooming Cup, 10 first prizes were selected from 3,731 projects in China. Four of the first prizes were won by alliance members. In June, on the occasion of the first anniversary of the alliance, with the support of academicians, CAICT, carriers, and industry partners, the alliance released the 5G Deterministic Network Industry Development Special Issue, which analyzes the 5G industry development trend from multiple perspectives, such as industry insight, alliance style, cutting-edge technologies, and industry practices, and has gained acclaim from the industry.

5G deterministic networks have the natural advantages of combining visual autonomous mobile robots (V-AMR).

Traditional AGV based on QR code and magnetic stripe navigation is evolving to visual AMR. Environment adaptation and cloud-based services will become the development trend of AMR, enabling the next-generation AMR to intelligently identify large-scale changes of targets and goods placement in any direction, improving the overall efficiency of multi-vehicle intelligent management and control without lockup. Visual navigation-based AMR has high requirements on bandwidth, latency, and computing power in scenarios such as large-scale AMR trunking control and multi-AMR collaborative object moving. Traditional 4G and Wi-Fi networks cannot meet these requirements. 5G deterministic networks have high bandwidth, low latency, and high reliability, with the inherent advantages of combining with AMR, flexible capacity expansion and high-concurrency multi-vehicle collaboration can be ensured for AMR clusters.

The project of "Practicing 5G Edge Computing and Building a New TCL Smart Industry Park", jointly submitted by TCL, China Mobile, Huawei, and Smart Technologies, won the first prize in the 2nd Blooming Cup 5G Application Contest. In this project, the V-AMR cloud-edge-device collaboration solution based on the 5G deterministic network breaks the computing capability limitation of V-AMR single vehicles, improves scenario adaptability, and integrates with WMS and other systems on the cloud, achieving the streamlining and collaboration of the entire process and multi-service systems. This joint solution has been deployed and verified in the TCL 5G smart factory. The interaction latency is within 20 ms, reducing the number of scheduling administrators by 20%, reducing material turnover days by 30%, greatly reducing costs and improving efficiency.

There will be a 5G Deterministic Network Industry Alliance Summit held in September 23 and 24. The success of 5G deterministic networks is not only a technological success, but also a success of industry chain cooperation and business practices. It requires the joint efforts of partners from all walks of life. By doing so, partners in 5GDNA will work together to provide a platform that combines more industries and scenarios with 5G deterministic networks, seize the innovation opportunities brought by 5G, and jointly create an intelligent future.
