GSMA Webinar | Dr. Huang Weilan: Optimising Manufacturing Performance through 5G, Edge Computing and Machine Vision

In the online workshop "Beyond Connectivity: IoT Transformation". Dr. Huang Weilan, Deputy Leader of the 5G Deterministic Networking Alliance (5GDNA) Industrial Internet Group, delivered a keynote speech entitled " Optimising Manufacturing

Performance through 5G, Edge Computing and Machine Vision - Haier Smart Factory MEC Project". She shared the best practices of the world's first Haier smart factory based on 5G deterministic networking.

World's first 5G+AI interconnection factory based on 5G deterministic networking

The world's first "5G+AI" interconnection factory based on 5G deterministic networking, jointly released by Haier, China Mobile, and Huawei, is based on the technology kernel of dynamic intelligent network slicing, ultra-performance heterogeneous MEC, and cloud native ultra-distributed architecture, jointly build a joint solution that covers the entire process of industrial manufacturing, including human, machine, material, law, environment, and testing. The solution includes 5G+ machine vision, 5G+AR man-machine collaboration, 5G+intelligent devices, AI+ intelligent transmission, AI+smart energy, and digital knowledge accumulation, so that that product quality, production efficiency, distribution efficiency are improved, the equipment downtime and the energy consumption cost are reduced. The release of the world's first smart factory solution also provides an important reference for the implementation of "5G+AI" in other domains. It can be replicated and applied to smart logistics, smart campus, and smart home, and become an important solution for cross-domain, cross-platform, and cross-industry enablement.

Build 5G Deterministic Networking to Enable Digital Transformation of Industries

In June 2019, the 5G Deterministic Networking Alliance was established. Currently, it has more than 100 member organizations from multiple domains, including carriers, multimedia, manufacturing, energy, healthcare, and IoV, and continuously promotes industry consensus and ecosystem construction, resolve the key technologies, business, ecosystem, and industry breakpoints in 5G industry implementation, and accelerate the development and commercial use of the 5G industry. 5G deterministic networking is based on the ultra-distributed architecture of cloud natives. With key technologies such as dynamic intelligent network slicing and ultra-performance heterogeneous MEC, 5G deterministic networking uses one cloud to meet differentiated network requirements and deterministic SLAs in the industry.

Connectivity + Computing + X, Building the Next-Generation MEC Solution

Connectivity+Computing+X: Ubiquitous connectivity, ultra-high-performance heterogeneous computing, and innovation anytime anywhere help build the next-generation MEC solution.5G MEC solution is based on the connection+computing collaboration capability, high-performance heterogeneous hardware, and MEC open platform, helping build ultimate service experience and new edge businesses. Based on the connection+computing collaboration capability, MEC collaborates with the entire network to dynamically allocate and adjust network resources, providing application-centered assurance of deterministic experience throughout the entire network, achieving one-point innovation, and network-wide replication. High-performance heterogeneous hardware integrates hardware acceleration capabilities such as GPU, NP, and AI to achieve high performance, high integration, and low power consumption. The MEC open platform integrates CT services and multi-industry applications without codes, implementing one-stop integration and quick service rollout.

5G MEC+ Machine Vision Helps Haier Optimize Manufacturing Performance

5G MEC opens powerful capabilities for partners to accelerate innovation of smart manufacturing applications. Partners use 5G bandwidth connection capabilities to achieve Gbps-level 5G bandwidth and use bandwidth management capabilities to ensure stable and reliable network quality, the app enablement capability is invoked to quickly bring visual applications and image stitching applications online and implement unified O&M. The AI capability is invoked to ensure service identification and intelligent service management. Haier cooperates with China Mobile, Huawei, and HC-vision to innovate the machine vision solution based on 5G MEC. 5G networks replace wired cables, MEC nodes are controlled and managed in a unified manner, and devices are automatically and uniformly maintained, resolve problems and challenges such as low deployment efficiency, limited processing capability, high O&M costs, inflexible application and algorithm updates, and poor scalability.

The GSMA Intelligence believes that the importance of IoT is unprecedented and beyond doubt. By 2025, the IoT revenue will reach US$1.1 trillion. Most services, including innovative solutions such as big data, machine learning, analysis, edge computing, and distributed ledgers, exceed connections. By building transformative IoT solutions, carriers and their partners are increasing productivity, reducing costs, and providing automated business processes to help build a sustainable and more efficient world.
